Dr. K. Denise Dennis publishes self-help book

Bloomfield Professor of Psychology Dr. K. Denise Dennis has utilized her experiences in the classroom and as a leadership coach to give people of all ages a new way to make powerful changes in their lives.

The self-published author and scholar has revamped her 2004 self-help book entitled Make That Change! Eight Steps for Crafting Your Ideal Life and has released its second edition, which was published June 11.

“I wrote the first edition of my book in 2004 and much has changed in the past ten years,” she said of her decision to pen a second installment. “My thoughts about what is necessary to make a personal change have shifted, and technology has changed dramatically as well. I wanted the book to reflect these changes, and to draw on more of my work with my clients that has taken place in the past decade.”

The owner and founder of Prepared Mind Coaching LLC, Dennis developed her latest program around inspirational lessons, exercises and case studies to give readers the insights necessary to create positive changes in their personal and professional lives.

By following the eight steps in the program, readers will learn such skills as identifying their "ideal life", setting meaningful goals, and overcoming the bad habits that are making those aspirations tougher to reach.

“I feel that everyone can benefit from coaching in some form,” said Dennis. “It helps people develop and maintain personal accountability for their actions. Through the eight steps in my Make That Change! program, the reader will begin to identify his or her goals in life and develop an action plan for accomplishing those goals. It is very hands-on, and the main take-away I hope people get from my book is an actual change; to develop and action plan and then take action.”

Amassing 25 years of experience as an educator, Dennis has held numerous roles during her tenure at Bloomfield, including chair of the College’s Social and Behavioral Sciences division from 2006-2012 as well as master coach of the Coaching Health for African-American Males to Promote Success (C.H.A.M.P.S.) program.

Also a published author in the academic realm (her work has been featured in publications including Academic Exchange Quarterly and Academic Leader among others), Dennis has long appreciated the ability that Bloomfield provides to pursue her life’s passions while still being able to educate students and make an impact in the College community.

“Bloomfield College embraces professional development in a variety of forms,” she said of the institution. “As a professor, I have the freedom as well as the responsibility to pursue interests outside of the classroom. My coaching work is an extension of my work in my classes. I am able to draw on my class material with my clients and I am able to draw on my coaching work to enhance my classes.  For me, my coaching work is a form of professional development, and I am happy I work at a place that allows me to pursue it in this manner.”
