Bloomfield College Student Wins "Best Undergraduate Poster" Award at Eastern Sociological Society Conference

Bloomfield College student Jorge Santana wins ESS Best Poster Award.

A criminal justice concentration graduate from Bloomfield College, Jorge Santana ’23, won the Best Undergraduate Poster award at the Eastern Sociological Society’s 93rd Annual Meeting held in Baltimore, Maryland in February 2023. This distinction was given to only five out of 70 undergraduate student posters recognized at the ESS Awards Ceremony.

Santana presented research from his sociology capstone project entitled “Resources, Reintegration, and Rehabilitation Programs for Offenders,” as part of his Senior Research Seminar course taught by Assistant Professor of Sociology Natascia Boeri, Ph.D.

In his research, Santana examined whether prisons are fulfilling their stated mission of rehabilitation. Based on interviews with individuals who were formerly incarcerated, Santana argued prisons are unable to successfully reintegrate and rehabilitate individuals due to institutional factors of our current prison system.

Santana, a native of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, graduated from Bloomfield College with a B.A. in sociology in December 2022.

The Eastern Sociological Society’s awards provide a means to amplify sociological work. The Society was founded in 1930 to advance sociological research, promote the effective teaching of sociology, develop more vital relationships between sociology and related disciplines, and to use the tools of the social sciences to address social problems.
