Twenty nine senior nursing students and five faculty visited the United Nations with Rev. Sherry Karasik, the college chaplain to attend seminars about the issue of human trafficking in the world. They were given a private tour of the United Nations building and spent the afternoon with Carol Smolenski of ECPAT which is a worldwide organization devoted to ending human trafficking in all areas of society.

During the opening of the Question Bridge exhibit in the Scott H. Kaplan ’02 Art Gallery, Hank Willis Thomas, one of the four collaborating artists on the project, noted that this is the first time the exhibit has been held at a college or university.

Hank Willis Thomas worked with fellow artist Chris Johnson on this project and collaborated with Bayete Ross Smith and Kamal Sinclair.

Bloomfield College is hosting Question Bridge, a multimedia art show at the Scott H. Kaplan ’02 Art Gallery beginning Thursday February 7, 2013 and closing on Friday, April 26, 2013. An official selection at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Question Bridge is a video about diversity and provides an intimate perspective of the complex dialogue between African American men. Exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, the ambition is to transform audiences’ appreciation for the diversity within any demographic group.

Bloomfield College kicked off a month of celebrating the history and achievements of African Americans with an opening ceremony that included music, speakers, the raising of the African American flag and a reception.

Each month, the Center for Student Leadership and Engagement publishes a calendar full of events and activities for Bloomfield College students. From discussion groups and information fairs to Student Goverment Meetings and even trips off campus, the CSLE Event Calendar provides students with tons of ways get involved!

With funding from the Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) Program Formula Grant, the CHAMPS program at Bloomfield College is hosting an independent film titled From Fatherless to Fatherhood with a discussion with the filmmaker Kobie Brown. The film will be shown at the Van Fossan Theatre at the Westminster Arts Center on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Westminster Arts Center is on the corner of Franklin and Fremont Streets in Bloomfield. The event is free to the public.

Bloomfield College wishes to provide information to our community from FEMA regarding how to apply for assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The deadline to apply for Disaster Aid is January 30, 2013, and can be requested by visiting disasterassistance.gov.

With funding from the Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) Program Formula Grant, the lower floor of the library, next to the media center, became a new space designed to enhance information literacy, promote discussion and collaborative work among students, hold workshops, and conduct presentations. The Learning Hub is a high tech room with two projection systems that can be run independently with dedicated speakers, dedicated laptop plugins around the room, VHS, DVD, CD and Blue Ray capability, and two mediascape mobile units.

Several students at Bloomfield College have submitted videos in the Financial Awareness Video Competition sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The year, Bloomfield College Students created three submissions to the contest. The contest winners will receive a $2500 team prize, have their video shown in local movie theatres, and receive professional career advise.

There exists a nationwide effort to draw more students into the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects. Leading the way, the Roche Foundation has given Bloomfield College a second gift to continue the work in bringing interested students into the STEM careers, especially first-generation students and underrepresented populations.
