Statement on Civility & Human Dignity
The mission of Bloomfield College is: "to prepare students to attain academic, personal and professional excellence in a multicultural and global society."
It is fundamental to our mission to create an unbiased community and to oppose vigorously any form of racism, religious intolerance, sexism, ageism, homophobia, heterosexism, and discrimination against those with disabling conditions. As the College recognizes the presence of gays, lesbians and bisexuals as members of our community, we therefore affirm the legitimacy and right of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals to create and enrich their cultural experience on our campus.
Consistent with this belief, discrimination and/or harassment based upon sexual orientation are prohibited. These include, but are not limited to, the following acts, even if communicative in nature. Each of the following are prohibited and could result in charges that could lead to the full range of sanctions, including suspension or expulsion from the College, under the College Code of Student Conduct.
- Use of force against the person or property of any member of the College Community, or against the person or property of anyone on College premises, or the threat of such physical abuse.
- Theft of, or intentional damage to, College property or property in the possession of, or owned by, any member of the College.
- Harassment, which is statutorily defined by New Jersey law to mean, and here means, purposefully making or causing to be made a communication or communications anonymously or at extremely inconvenient hours, or in offensively coarse language, or in any other manner likely to cause annoyance or alarm, or subjecting or threatening to subject another to striking, kicking, shoving or other offensive touching, or engaging in any other course of conduct of repeatedly committed acts with purpose to alarm or seriously annoy any other person.
- Defamation, which is judicially defined to mean, and here means, the unprivileged oral or written publication of a false statement of fact that exposes the person about whom it is made to hatred, contempt or ridicule, or subjects the person to loss of the goodwill and confidence of others, or so harms that person’s reputation as to deter others from associating with her or him.
While any of the four categories of acts listed could lead to the full range of sanctions as listed in the Code of Conduct, clearly minor instances of such prohibited behavior could be resolved at the Dean level. The initial judgments of the nature of such an act or acts are to be made by the appropriate Dean. Students believing themselves to be victims of behaviors as suggested above, should contact the Dean of Students. Faculty, believing themselves to be victims of these behaviors, should contact the Dean of Academic Affairs. All other persons should contact the Affirmative Action Officer.
