Will Bloomfield College's identity, mission and legacy be preserved?

Yes. Montclair State University is committed to supporting and serving Bloomfield College students and our mission to provide a transformative education with an emphasis on empowering first-generation students from diverse backgrounds to attain academic, personal, and professional excellence.

Bloomfield and Montclair are forming a relationship that will build upon the strengths of both institutions, and enhance academic and other opportunities for current and future students at both campuses.

Will the Bloomfield College name live on?

Yes. When the transaction is finalized, the College will be known as "Bloomfield College of Montclair State University."

Is Bloomfield College now part of Montclair State University?

No, not yet. Both Boards have authorized the presidents at the two institutions to sign an Agreement and Plan of Merger stating their intent to form a long-term relationship. The signing sets in motion a series of reviews and approvals by various third parties including accreditors and regulators. Our shared goal is for the merger to be completed on or before June 30, 2023.

When will the partnership between Bloomfield and Montclair become official?

Our shared goal is for the merger to be completed on or before June 30, 2023. The Boards, presidents, administrations, and communities of both institutions are working together, along with various regulators and accreditors, to ensure this process proceeds thoroughly, smoothly, and in accordance with applicable law.

What will this relationship look like, when finalized?

The plan is for Bloomfield College to become a constituent college of Montclair State University known as the "Bloomfield College of Montclair State University," which will provide a distinctive educational experience rooted in Bloomfield College's history and mission.

What is needed to complete the agreement?

The signing of the Agreement and Plan of Merger sets in motion a series of actions that include reviews and approvals by third parties, including the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE), and other accreditors and regulators, as well as action by the state legislature. Once that is done, the merger of Bloomfield College into Montclair State University can take effect.

Will Bloomfield retain its independence?

Under the Agreement and Plan of Merger, the newly formed Bloomfield College of Montclair State University will continue to offer a distinctive educational experience rooted in Bloomfield's history and mission, however it will be a constituent college of Montclair State University.

Will Bloomfield be private or public?

Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, as a constituent college of Montclair State University, will be a public institution.

What will happen to the Bloomfield campus?

Montclair intends to maintain the current Bloomfield campus.

When will you know more? When will you tell us more?

The College will continue to share significant updates with students, families, employees, and alumni through our usual communications platforms as appropriate.

Students

Should I register for Spring 2023 classes?

Yes. Students should pursue their studies as planned.

How will tuition, room and board, and other fees be impacted by the merger?

Montclair has committed that Bloomfield students enrolled at the time of the merger will be able to continue their education without interruption and without additional costs.

What will happen to continuing students? Will my academic experience continue uninterrupted throughout this merger?

All currently enrolled Bloomfield College students will have a pathway to complete their degrees. Both institutions are committed to ensuring that learning continues uninterrupted for Bloomfield students. Bloomfield College students enrolled at the time of the merger will have the ability to continue their current programs of study and will not be required to re-apply for admission.

Will seniors still be able to graduate from Bloomfield College in May 2023?

Yes. Eligible students will graduate in May 2023 with a Bloomfield College degree.

Is Bloomfield still accepting applications for the 2023-2024 academic year?

Yes. Bloomfield is currently accepting applications.

Will Bloomfield students need to reapply for admission?

After the merger, all currently enrolled Bloomfield College students will be able to continue in their current programs of study and will not be required to re-apply for admission.

How will the merger with Montclair impact my scholarship or financial aid package?

Bloomfield students enrolled at the time of the merger will be able to continue their education without interruption and without additional costs.

Montclair is one of the most affordable universities in New Jersey, and it is possible that most students will find their education to be equally or more affordable than what they're currently paying.

What will happen to Bloomfield College's student government, clubs and non-academic programs?

Both institutions appreciate the heritage and traditions of Bloomfield College and will work together on this important matter.

How will students be able to access official records (e.g. transcripts) after the merger?

Official records will be maintained by Montclair State University.

After the merger, will students graduate with a degree from Bloomfield or Montclair?

This is one of the important matters that still needs to be addressed. The College will continue to share significant updates with students and their families through our usual communications platforms as appropriate.

Will my classes still be held on Bloomfield campus or will I have to travel to Montclair?

Montclair intends to maintain the separate geographic campus of Bloomfield College and provide a distinctive educational experience at that location. Exactly which classes will be offered, when and where will be determined at a later point.

Will students have access to counseling?

Of course. Student counseling services will continue to be available.

Athletics

Will Bloomfield's sports teams continue to compete as Bloomfield?

Bloomfield College remains committed to its NCAA Division II sports teams. This is among the important matters we are working hard to address.

Will my athletic eligibility be impacted in 2022-2023?

As of now, student athletes will maintain their current eligibility status for the 2022-2023 academic year. All athletic teams are poised to compete through Spring 2023.

Will Bloomfield teams be able to compete in 2023-2024?

This is one of the important matters that still needs to be addressed. The two institutions are working with each other and the NCAA to determine options in maintaining athletics at Bloomfield College.

Will this impact athletic scholarships, recruitment, signing day, etc. 2023-2024?

This is one of the important matters that still needs to be addressed. We will work closely with the NCAA to determine how best to proceed with current and future athletic team schedules. We will provide updates as we know more.

Employees

Will I have a job?

Montclair State University will make every effort to provide employment opportunities for Bloomfield College's current employees.

Bloomfield College and Montclair State University will review employment information of Bloomfield College's employees, and within 60 days from the execution of the Agreement and Plan of Merger, Montclair State University, in consultation with Bloomfield College, will begin interviews of Bloomfield College's employees for possible employment.

What will happen to Bloomfield College employees?

Montclair State University will make every effort to provide employment opportunities for Bloomfield College's current employees. The leadership of the two institutions will work to identify opportunities for current Bloomfield College employees.

Alumni and Donors

Will the Bloomfield College Alumni Association continue to exist?

Bloomfield College Alumni Association will continue to operate and be actively supported by Montclair State University with the same level of support, interaction and enthusiasm as Montclair State University provides to the Montclair State University Student and Alumni Association.

What will happen to money donated by alumni and others?

Bloomfield remains grateful for its generous donors and external financial supporters. The College continues to seek additional funds. New philanthropy may enable the College to maintain educational pathways that are often not otherwise available for minority and low-income students.

Bloomfield College and Montclair State University will evaluate restricted funds to determine whether any of these restrictions need to be modified in light of the merger. Decisions affecting Bloomfield College's restricted funds will be made transparently and within the bounds of the applicable law.

How will Bloomfield graduates be able to access official records (e.g. transcripts) after the merger?

Official records will be maintained by Montclair State University.
