For Nicholas M. Baglione ’11, who today serves as Vice President of Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis at Morgan Stanley, attending Bloomfield College has been a family legacy starting with his mother who studied nursing at the College.

“My mother was the first to attend college, and following in her footsteps, my brother and sister and I all went to Bloomfield,” he said. “My sister studied English and my brother’s interest was in education. I started in nursing, like my mother, but later switched to accounting and business. I earned a B.S. in Accounting as well as a B.S. in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Economics.”

At Bloomfield, Baglione became known for his proclivity for math. He held a work-study position as a Peer Mentor Tutor (PMT) where he tutored his peers in remedial math—and later, in micro- and macroeconomics.

“Serving as a tutor gave me the opportunity to get close with professors. I was their referral when they had students who needed extra support. The position gave me free reign over computer labs, which was very helpful to me for my own studies,” said Baglione. “I was also in the Honors Program and served on the Honors Program Council where we planned the finer points of what became the Honors Studies Lounge. I enjoyed doing outreach for the Honors Program, as part of a resurgence effort, and helping to plan the overall objectives for the program.”

Baglione recalls a special private course open only to honors program students. “We studied Darwinism, had guest lecturers and read his book about the origin of our species. The course also covered how our human history has impacted modern contemporary religion. This Bloomfield class that I had the opportunity to experience as an honors student, influenced a great deal of my thinking, still into today,” he said.

According to Baglione, a monetary policy course at Bloomfield put his work ethic to the test. “We had to compete in making monetary action recommendations at the Federal Reserve with other colleges that were known for stellar business programs. It was scary, yet a tremendous experience, putting ourselves to the test,” he said. “This is when I learned that my education at Bloomfield held up during challenging trials and testing. The competitive spirit and fierce work ethic I put in then have been carrying me forward throughout my life.”

Tenacity and persistence have always paid off for Baglione. He started his business career at smaller companies, but never gave up on where he wanted to ultimately land. Each night, he would send out 50-100 applications to the larger companies. And unending rejection letters did not deter his spirit.

“Eventually, Morgan Stanley, after rejecting my applications for some time, offered me a position and I have since moved up through manager and director roles. My single focus has been to work hard to outperform everyone around me, and this year I reached an important milestone when I was promoted to Vice President of Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis where I conduct forward-looking financial analyses to support the company’s strategic decision-making and also engage in the training of employees,” said Baglione.

A demanding professional life of working in New York City has not kept Baglione from returning to his alma mater. Back on campus, he has served as an alumni panelist addressing business majors, providing tips and advice to current Bloomfield College students.

My best advice, he says, that has always worked for me, is: “Don’t let anyone outwork you. The work you put in here at school will directly correlate with the results you get when you graduate.”
