When Bianca Gomez ’23 met a Storyteller on her campus tour of Bloomfield College, she fell in love with the small, intimate campus. While she didn’t know it at the time, she would eventually become a Storyteller herself, and help future BC students start their higher education journey.

“I always knew I’d go to college,” said Gomez. “I would get involved in different things when I was in high school, but nothing really stuck. This searching for a connection with an activity, and even being able to commit to a specific course of study, continued into my early college years. Once I was at Bloomfield, it took me a bit of soul searching to figure out what I was good at and what I wanted to pursue for my career.”

Gomez, who grew up in Belleville, New Jersey, had several “touches” with Bloomfield College before she made up her mind about colleges. “I attended a college fair and visited the Bloomfield table. I then attended an Instant Decision Day and spoke with an admissions counselor. But it was meeting the College’s Storyteller, a student already on their path to a degree, that impacted me the most,” said Gomez. “In fact, the College called me while I was still on my campus tour with my family to tell me I was accepted. It was very exciting and I was very happy.”

Gomez says she was always “open” but when it came to talking to people, she grew from her experiences at Bloomfield. “The dynamic was one where everyone on campus was like a family. I went to events and met more of the people who worked there. At the spring scholarship brunch, I made a number of important campus connections who encouraged me to apply for Storyteller during my sophomore year,” she said.

According to Gomez, serving as a Storyteller helped her practice and gain skills in interpersonal relations. In addition to giving campus tours to prospective students and their families, the role includes front desk work such as answering calls to the Admission Office. “I adore the people I work with in Admission,” she said. “Admission is my family. My boss gives me amazing advice, and I know I will continue to be involved with the College after I graduate.”

Gomez is grateful for the support she has had at Bloomfield, and feels further gratified when she can give that support back to another student. “When I do tours, and the next year see one of my tour students on campus, it’s so fulfilling to know I helped them make their decision to attend Bloomfield. Once they are here, I keep an eye out for them and offer them my support. It all comes full circle for me.”

“My best advice for future college students,” says Gomez, “is to get involved on campus. It makes you happier, lifts your spirits and helps you connect with people who can support you. I tell them that it will be the best decision of their lives.”

A former nursing major turned business major, Gomez eagerly joined the Business Student Association when it was created in spring 2022. “I had taken two business classes in high school and loved them, so once I realized nursing was not for me, I changed to business finance. I then learned I didn’t like the finance piece. I did a bit more research and switched to a marketing concentration. I have now landed on what I know I love, and am currently doing a marketing internship in the Office of Admission.”

After graduation, Gomez has a few ideas about what may be next in her lineup. She is interested in researching a possible internship at Goya Foods or at another company that plans the Puerto Rican Parade each year. She sees networking with connections she already has at these companies as an ideal path for potentially being hired.

Gomez says she has also gained experience and skills in a number of volunteer roles. “Every summer since high school, in June, and again in September, I have helped with packaging items for the homeless in Secaucus. I have been involved in helping set up for the Puerto Rican Parade and cleaning up after. I have also helped to feed the homeless in December, as part of these activities,” said Gomez.

“I think my college positions as well as my work as a volunteer all these years will help to open doors for me for seeking a permanent position, hopefully in marketing,” she said.
