- Who is our new course materials provider?
- Akademos is a fully online textbook store, powered by the TextbookX platform. They were selected to be the College’s new provider for textbooks and course materials beginning Fall 2019. Akademos was founded in 1999 by a university professor, who saw first-hand how the costs and distribution textbook model weakened classroom learning. Today, Akademos has grown to be a fully online textbook and course materials provider with the mission of saving students money on textbooks and providing faculty with a quick and intuitive adoption submission process.
- How will faculty adopt materials for their courses?
- The integrated online bookstore adoption portal at https://Bloomfield.TextbookX.com helps faculty and staff consolidate efforts and quickly submit their information. It is designed to make the adoption of textbooks and course materials for the upcoming academic term easier and more efficient for the entire campus community. Some departments have staff members who collect and coordinate adoptions on behalf of the faculty in the department. Both faculty and staff can adopt course materials through https://Bloomfield.TextbookX.com by logging in with their Bloomfield College credentials. Here is a link to a video demonstration on how to use the adoption portal.

- Yes, during the Fall 2019 semester Akademos will be coming to campus to conduct faculty-wide training. the Account Manager, Matthew Knapp, will be available for individual or departmental consultations and trainings, which can be done either in person or virtually through a web meeting. You can contact him at mknapp@akademos.com.

- Will Bloomfield still have a physical bookstore on campus?
- No, students will be able to order their textbooks online at https://Bloomfield.TextbookX.com. Moving to an online model will allow students to save money on textbooks while providing a more convenient shopping option, similar to the ways they already shop online.
- What options does Akademos provide to save student money?
- Akademos provides competitive pricing on all materials. Exact savings will depend on which format a student chooses to purchase their course materials. Based on our top 50 adoptions, we anticipate a savings of about 30% on these materials by making this change to Akademos. They also offer a price-match guarantee on new books, if students find their course materials advertised at a lower price from a competing retailer. The peer-to-peer marketplace also reduces student textbook costs by 25-35%.
- Will Akademos be available for buy-back at the end of the semesters?
- Yes, Akademos will have a partner company on campus to offer buy-back services to students at the end of each semester. In addition, students will be able to sell their books directly through the peer-to-peer online Marketplace, if they choose.
- Does Akademos support Open Educational Resources (OER) materials?
- Yes. Akademos recognizes that developing or using OER materials is one of the ways that faculty members can save students money on textbook costs. Through the adoption portal, faculty will be able to indicate when a course uses OER/zero cost materials and can provide a note or link to the location where students can access these items directly. The Academic Affairs Office asks that you use the portal to indicate when you have OER materials, in order for us to generate accurate reporting of our campus OER initiatives and support them.
- What are the upcoming adoption deadlines?
- The Higher Education Opportunities Act requires higher education institutions to provide the list of assigned textbooks for each course (including ISBNs and prices) during registration. Based on the Bloomfield College timelines, adoptions will be due October 10 for the spring and March 10 for summer and fall terms. For more information on HEOA compliance please see the link below.
