The mission of the Coaching Habits for African-American Male Students to Promote Success (C.H.A.M.P.S.) Program is to strengthen Bloomfield College’s delivery of student support services in order to increase the enrollment of African-American male students at Bloomfield College and improve their academic success, retention rates, and graduation rates, as well as prepare them for their future professions. C.H.A.M.P.S. Program activities will include InsideTrack coaching; peer tutoring; online Smarthinking tutoring; leadership workshops and an annual retreat; mental health outreach programs; and access to the Single Stop Program.

The C.H.A.M.P.S. Program is funded through a Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) Competitive Grant. Bloomfield College was awarded the FY21 PBI C Grant in September of 2021. Since being designated as a PBI in 2008, Bloomfield College has received more than $11.5 million in funding from the U.S Department of Education's Predominantly Black Institutions Program. African-American male students are the primary focus of the C.H.A.M.P.S. Program, but all interested Bloomfield College students are welcomed to apply. Students who commit to the C.H.A.M.P.S. Program will be required to meet the following conditions:

  • Submit a program application and sign a student contract for the academic year: APPLY HERE
  • Attend monthly 1:1 coaching sessions
  • Participate in four leadership workshops annually and/or attend the annual Leadership retreat
  • Attend two mental health outreach programs per academic year
Program Information

The C.H.A.M.P.S. Program is a student-centric support and coaching program that aims to increase the academic success, retention, and graduation rates of African-American male students and prepare them for their future professions. African-American male students are the focus of the C.H.A.M.P.S. Program but, any student enrolled at Bloomfield College that is not part of EOF, TRIO SSS, and/or McNair is welcome to apply. C.H.A.M.P.S. Program participants will have access to the following resources:

  • InsideTrack Coaching: Proactive, personalized coaching to help students identify and overcome both academic and non-academic barriers to college persistence and graduation
  • Single Stop: Screening and application support to connect students and their families to public benefits and wraparound services, such as tax preparation, child care, and immigration consultation
  • Peer Tutoring: 1:1 and group tutoring from Bloomfield College peers in areas of academic need
  • Smarthinking Online Tutoring: 24/7 access to academic help from experts including personalized tutoring in core subjects, and expert guidance for improving students' writing from essays to resumes
  • Leadership Workshops and an Annual Retreat: These workshops and annual retreat will help students develop powerful relationships, set SMART goals, create personal responsibility, and develop a defined purpose
  • Mental Health Outreach Programs: Workshops and informational sessions on a variety of topics which may include: Stress Management, Anxiety, Depression/Mood Disorders, Self-Harm, Grief and Loss, Suicide: Awareness & Prevention, Personal Counseling Services, Diversity/Cultural Identity, Sexuality, and Gender Identity. C.H.A.M.P.S. program participants will be required to attend TWO mental health outreach programs per year
  • Summer Counseling: A minimum of THREE personalized correspondences (text, email, or phone call) from C.H.A.M.P.S. staff or coaches during the summer months from May through August
