First-Year Pathways

Calling All First Year Students!

Your career planning begins now. It is never to early to explore the opportunities that will lead you to your vocation, calling, purpose and dream profession!

First Year Focus: Self-Assessment & Success Planning - PATHWAY 

  • Students should meet with First Year Professional Academic Advisor each semester to register for 4 course units each semester 
  • Discuss time management strategies based on academic, work and personal responsibilities with Academic Advising
  • Review course sequencing with Academic Advisor ahead of registration 
  • Complete student planner tutorial (virtually or person) with Academic Advisor
  •  Along with Academic Advising, create 4 year graduation timeline for graduation 
  • Discuss add/drop and withdrawal policies and procedures with Academic Advisor
  •  Discuss academic areas of concern with Academic Advisor and receive a referral to campus resources as necessary (Center for Student Success) 
  • In FYS class, students are to engage in assessing personal values, interests, skills and abilities through career self-assessment tools such as the FOCUS II Personality Type Indicator 
  • Students will schedule an appointment with a member of CAACE to have a brief discussion about career and academic goals. 
  • Students will visit CAACE to learn how to research various career fields and majors if still undeclared 
  • Students will engage with Center for Student Leadership and Engagement(CSLE) to get involved on and off campus (i.e.- student organizations, service learning & community service opportunities.)
  • Students will be required to create a resume and cover letter and have it critiqued by a member of CAACE 
  • Students will attend Center for Student Success events designed exclusively for first year students
  • Students will take part in the CAACE Mentorship program to connect with a professional, on a long-term basis, for assistance with professional development (Qooper)
  • Students will create an online professional profile on Handshake and LinkedIn 
  • Students will begin to create an e-portfolio during FYS class and may seek guidance from the Writing Center or CAACE
