Are face coverings required for students, faculty, staff and visitors?

Yes. Face coverings, specifically masks, are required when on campus inside and outside buildings. If you have a documented medical condition that prevents you from adhering to this requirement, please contact the Human Resources department. Face shields are not substitutes for a mask, but are permissible if health issues prevent one from wearing a mask or to provide disability-related accommodations. Medical certification would need to be provided. For a disability-related accommodation (ie, hearing impaired), the Office of Disability Services should be contacted for providing the required documentation.

Will the College be offering classes in-person or will all classes be held online?

Our plan is to offer as many in-person classes as possible. However, because guidelines required by the State of New Jersey mandate social distancing in classrooms, we have limited classroom capacity to offer most of our classes in person only without some online components.
 
What is a hybrid course?

Hybrid courses are a combination of both in-person and online sessions. Hybrid courses are a combination of both in-person and online sessions. If NJ State COVID regulations persist into Fall 2021, we will have a limited number of traditional hybrid courses due to classroom capacity. As a result, many of our classes will be held alternating hybrid where students in the class will be assigned to different groups that meet only on certain days while the rest of the class participates at the same time virtually. Hybrid courses will be clearly designated in Student Planning.

When will my course schedule be ready for fall?

Advising and Registration for Fall 2021 begins on April 5, 2021 via priority registration. The Fall 2021 schedule will be available for all students to view on March 29, 2021. The individual sections will designate whether they are in-person lecture, online asynchronous, online synchronous, or hybrid courses.

Will the residence halls be open?

Based on the State of New Jersey health and safety guidelines and the College’s protocols, the residence halls will be open for the Spring 2021 semester. Check-in for the spring will be by appointment only on January 11th, 12th and 13th. REH will notify students of their specific check-in date and time. Out of state students will be contacted about early check-in or delayed check-in based on NJ guidance on travel restrictions. ALL RESIDENT STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO GET A COVID-19 TEST WITH A NEGATIVE RESULT AT LEAST FIVE DAYS BEFORE CHECK-IN APPOINTMENT.

Will the Counseling Center be available?

The Counseling Center staff will be available via email and phone for counseling purposes, needs, and referrals. Hours available Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. You may call 973-748-9000, ext. 1403 & 1302 or email: Personal_Counseling@Bloomfield.edu

Will the Student Center be open?

The Student Center will be open during the spring semester but the lounges will remain closed until further notice. Hours will be announced on the BC Portal.

Will the Health Services Office be open?

Will I be able to meet with the College Chaplain?

The College Chaplain will be available via email, phone, Zoom or Skype for spiritual counseling purposes and needs.

Will the dining hall be open?

Yes, the dining hall will be open for service in the spring semester.

What meal options will I have?

Are there any other changes being made in the dining hall I should be made aware of?

All meals will be physically served by dining services staff in order to reduce points of contact as much as possible. Additionally, all surfaces will be sanitized frequently.

How do I retrieve mail sent to the College?

Resident students can retrieve their mail on a weekly basis from the Office of Residential Education & Housing. Please contact the department to pick up your mail and/or packages. For questions contact, Residence_life@bloomfield.edu

Will the Gymnasium be available?

The Gymnasium will be closed until further notice.

Are student events in the Student Center still being held?

All student events and activities will be held virtually until further notice.

For online and hybrid courses, is there a preferred software platform for video conferencing?

For students in online and hybrid courses, Google Meet is our preferred video conferencing software that we are supporting and is available in the MYBloomfieldCollege portal; occasionally you may be involved in meetings using Zoom or other platforms.

COVID-19 Physical Plant FAQ

How does COVID-19 transmit and what does the CDC say about cleaning/disinfecting routines?

There is much to learn about the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Based on what is currently known about the virus and about similar coronaviruses that cause SARS and MERS, spread from person-to-person happens most frequently from close contact (within about 6 feet). This type of transmission occurs via respiratory droplets, but disease transmission via infectious aerosols is currently uncertain. Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented. Transmission of coronavirus occurs much more commonly through respiratory droplets than through objects and surfaces, like doorknobs, countertops, keyboards, toys, etc. Current evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in community settings.

What PPE and materials will be provided to my area (i.e. the campus standard set of materials)?

The College will provide disinfectants, paper towels, and disposable gloves throughout the workspace and classrooms for employee and student use in wiping down surfaces. The disinfectants will be alcohol-based wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol. Future instructions and training on how to properly use disinfectants will be communicated closer to the reopening date and will be posted where supplies are provided.

The College will be providing students and employees with a Welcome Back Kit. Within this kit, students will be provided four (4) reusable facemasks, hand sanitizer, and a touch tool. Employees will be provided two (2) reusable facemasks, hand sanitizer, and a touch tool. Additionally, any faculty member who wishes to have a plastic face shield for lecturing purposes can request one. 

An inventory of disposable masks have been secured. The disposable masks will be located in the Security Office where students and visitors who come to a building without a mask can be directed so they can obtain the proper PPE before being served by your area. Other high-traffic areas who serve outside visitors (i.e. The President’s Office, Student Financial Services, Enrollment Management, Vice President’s offices, etc.) will have a small inventory of disposable masks. 

The College has purchased free-standing hand sanitizer stands to go in high traffic common areas. An inventory of 100ml bags have been purchased for refilling the free-standing units has also been secured. Though hand sanitizer is a good way to combat the spread of COVID-19, an individual washing their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds is the CDC recommended method.

PSAs/Signage will be posted across campus reflecting OSHA and CDC recommendations. Before returning to campus, the College community will be provided with proper training and protocols regarding the use of PPE and practices put in place to best mitigate the spread of COVID-19. 

Boxes of assorted sized nitrile exam gloves have been purchased and will be located in every classroom and office space for students, staff, and faculty to safety disinfect their personal work stations.

The of use Plexiglas shields, tables or other barriers to ensure minimum distances in the workplace, as recommended by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, are in the process of being installed in student facing areas. Each departmental director has identified areas in need of Plexiglas barriers and partitions. Due to supply chain and constraints surrounding the installation process, these barriers will be installed in order of high-traffic areas first and followed by individual offices. All Plexiglas barriers will be installed as soon as possible.

For student facing offices that queues naturally form requests for social distancing floor decals should be made at this time. Additionally, floor decals will be used within classroom settings to ensure seating remain six-feet apart throughout the day. 

Work stations, classrooms, and common areas have been reconfigured or reassigned to different stations to ensure the minimum distancing. Dependent upon Government orders, modified room capacities will be communicated across campus. Furniture and work equipment are in the process of being reconfigured to facilitate social distancing. For example, disabling tables and chairs in meeting, lunch, or break rooms may facilitate social distancing and compliance with the CDC guidelines of at least 6 feet of distance between seats. Special attention has been paid to areas where printers, copiers and other types of shared equipment are located, and consider moving the equipment or designating a single employee to operate that equipment, distribute print-outs, etc.

The CDC states that routine HVAC maintenance is recommended. Although it is never the first line of prevention, general ventilation adjustments in the workplace have been made: 

  • Maintain the indoor air temperature and humidity at comfortable levels for building occupants;
  • Ensured ventilation systems operate properly and provide the most efficient indoor air quality for the current occupancy level for each space; 
  • Science labs have opened minimum outdoor air dampers to 100% to reduce or eliminate recirculation;
  • Rooftop HVAC systems ensured to pull in a code required amount of fresh air 24 hours a day;
  • All air filters were replaced on campus during June to ensure they are within service life and appropriately installed;
  • And air systems are run 24 hours a day to enhance air exchanges in the building space.

What is the current plan for cleaning buildings for Fall 2020?

The College has worked with local and state health departments to ensure appropriate local protocols and guidelines, such as updated/additional guidance for cleaning and disinfection, are followed, including for identification of new potential cases of COVID-19. Additionally, the College has purchased a mobile Clorox electronic sprayer to be used throughout campus. 

In accordance with CDC recommendations, cleaning with soap and water reduces number of germs, dirt and impurities on the surface. When properly used, disinfectants kill germs on surfaces. Physical Plant has increased and will continue to operate at increased levels of routine cleaning (i.e. sweeping, mopping, changing of trash, etc.), but has also partnered with ABM (an outside cleaning company) for assistance in the disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces in all buildings, including door knobs, light switches, and other surfaces. ABM’s certified disinfection specialists are trained in proper use of PPE, chemical use, and cleaning techniques. ABM’s certified disinfection specialists adhere to disinfecting protocols that are approved by their in-house health care team and CDC Disease Specialists. Below outlines the plan for specific spaces on campus:

Reentry Disinfection- ABM will provide a one-time disinfection of the entire campus that is timed with the College’s plan for the return of staff. This will be completed by ABM’s certified disinfection specialists with EPA-registered disinfectants.

High Touch Disinfection- ABM will provide a recurring cleaning a disinfection program that is site specific for each facility type based on occupancy levels that includes increased frequency of disinfection of all high touch point areas in a facility. These areas include common areas, bathrooms, and classrooms. This does not include office spaces. High touch point areas will be sanitized up to three times a day. 

Nightly Disinfection- During non-operating hours, ABM’s certified disinfection specialists will disinfect all buildings in use beyond the high touch point cleaning conducted during the day. 

Classrooms & Offices- In addition to the professional cleaning and disinfecting by Physical Plant and ABM, Physical Plant will provide the College community with the means to conduct additional intermittent cleaning of their specific areas, meets the CDC recommendation to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  As previously mentioned, the campus community will be provided with EPA approved cleaning spray, paper towels, and gloves that is effective against the virus that causes COVID-19 to clean their personal space before and after use. There will be communication provided to all students and employees regarding proper cleaning techniques and efforts. 

Common Space- Physical Plant will close or modify certain common areas, such as lunch rooms, time clock stations, lounges, and fitness centers so that employees can socially distance. Directors should consider limiting meetings or conferences, and conduct meetings virtually as much as possible. Additionally, water fountains will be closed. As previously mentioned, high touch areas will be disinfected and cleaned three times a day by the ABM certified disinfection specialists with EPA-registered disinfectants.  

Bathrooms- Bathrooms that are located in high-traffic areas including office spaces will be cleaned and sterilized three (3) times a day by the ABM certified disinfection specialists in high-traffic buildings. All hand dryers will be taken off-line and replaced by paper towels. 

Computer Labs- Gloves will be required in all open lab areas. Disinfecting stations will be set up in environments using shared hardware resources. Students will be required to clean their stations after use. Cleaning items and instructions will be provided and posted accordingly. Keyboard covers will be installed and replaced regularly to assist with high-contact surfaces. Computer labs will be professionally cleaned daily, including desk areas, workstations and screen, hardware peripherals, and all human interface devices (keyboards, mice, multimedia controls, etc.).

Areas Exposed to COVID-19--A protocol developed by the Emergency Response Team and distributed to the College community that addresses reporting and cleaning protocols for areas that are exposed to the virus. These areas will be closed and isolated immediately once identified for further inspection, deep cleaning, and other safety measures. 

What type of materials will be used to disinfect office buildings and classrooms during Fall 2020? 

Physical Plant is using Diversey Oxivir 1 Disinfectant to clean most surfaces. Diversey Oxivir 1 Disinfectant has demonstrated effectiveness against viruses similar to 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) on hard, non-porous surfaces and is qualified under EPA’s emerging viral pathogen program for use against SARS-CoV-2, a coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Will all areas be open for staff, students, and faculty?

Some areas that are subject to large groups congregating (i.e. the cafeteria, lounges, weight rooms etc.) will be subject to closure, limited capacities, or new procedures.  These areas will be specifically communicated to the community as we approach reopening. 

How can I purchase more PPE once the semester starts?

In order to maintain adequate levels and track PPE purchases, departmental requests for additional PPE must be made by the department's director through a request form which will need to be approved by the respective Vice President. Due to supply chain slowdowns and limited equipment availability, PPE requests must be made well in advance to ensure timeliness of receipt. Physical Plant will have an inventory of regular PPE on hand but inventories are subject to the same supply chain and availability barriers the rest of the College will face. We ask that each requestor be mindful not to over-order PPE. PPE orders will be charged to your department's expense account. Future PPE request instructions, including the request form, will be sent out in a separate email at a later date. You will not need to request any PPE through this form at this time.

IT FAQ

Will the IT Help Desk be open for walk-in support?

IT will be open by appointment only during regular business hours to all students. We will require anyone who enters the office to wear a mask and gloves, and to sign in. We will not be able to service personal laptops and devices. 

I need tech support; how do I reach someone at Help Desk?

Help Desk will still be available for support during the hours of 8 am to 5 pm Monday - Friday. You may call us at ext: 1224. We are also reachable via email at helpdesk@bloomfield.edu. When emailing the Help Desk please, provide us with as much information as possible along with your ID number, and a screenshot of the issue so we can provide assistance as quickly as possible.

Can I access my accounts remotely?

All accounts can be accessed remotely via the MyBloomfield Portal at mybloomfield.bloomfield.edu

Will WiFi be available on campus?

Yes. WiFi will be available across campus. A campus WiFi availability map can be found on the IT Portal Page.

I do not have access to a computer, who can I contact?

You can email helpdesk@bloomfield.edu with your ID number, name, and contact information, and we will assist you.

I do not have access to the Internet, what can I do?

On the IT portal page we have several documents listed on how to access WiFi when not on campus.

I need a replacement ID, or to take an ID photo. Is the ID Center Open?

The ID center will reopen in August with a brand new schedule that will be announced shortly, and will be found on the IT portal page. 

Will there be open labs and printing locations on campus in the fall?

We are working to have labs opened as well as printing available in the fall, however the number of available computers and printers will be reduced to follow CDC guidelines. Access to computer labs and printing may change during the semester to comply with ongoing state regulation changes. 

Will computers on campus be cleaned regularly?

Yes, all high-touch surfaces will be cleaned often as per CDC guidelines.

How do I clean my own computer?

We suggest using disinfecting wipes, lightly wiping down your computer and following the directions found on the wipes as to how long you need to wait before using the surface. Minimum alcohol content should be 75%. Monitors and laptop screens should not be sprayed with any fluid that may leak into controls.

Where can I access the Online Bookstore?

How does the online bookstore work?

For your reference, a FAQ has been attached to this email to assist you in answering any questions you may have surrounding how the online bookstore operates. You can also access this email by visiting the bookstore webpage or portal page. 

When should I order my textbooks? 

As soon as possible! Once you log into the bookstore, a list of books that the classes you registered for require or suggest will be reflected and available for you to purchase, rent, or download. If your course does not have a textbook listed, please continue to check back to see if one is added.

The earlier you order your books the less stress you will experience as the semester approaches! 

Where should I have my textbooks mailed?

Students are strongly encouraged to have their ordered textbooks mailed to their home addresses. 

As many of you may have experienced this spring, mail and delivery services have had unexpected delays. For that reason, as well as eliminating unnecessary crowds in the mailroom, we are strongly recommending that residential students who may be mail-ordering books and other supplies for the semester have them delivered home to bring with you when you move on campus. We know how important it is to your academic success to having your textbooks--please take these delays into consideration when deciding where to mail your books. 

Am I eligible to request a book voucher to assist in covering the costs of my textbooks? 

All pending information must be submitted to the financial aid office to become eligible for your book voucher. This includes any pending state or federal verification requests. Additionally, students must complete and return the Financial Aid Authorization form, and complete all loan requirements. You can check to see if you have any pending aid or missing documents by visiting your Financial Aid Self-Service page and reviewing items listed under the “Checklist” subsection. The sooner you complete these processes, the sooner you will have the ability to request a book voucher.

Great, I am all taken care of in Financial Aid! I believe I am eligible for a book voucher, when will I have access to these funds?

Students who have a valid credit on their financial aid account may request a book voucher. You can check to see if you have a valid credit on your account by viewing your Student Finance Self-Service page. If you are eligible the amount listed next to “Total Amount Due” will reflect a negative balance. 

How do I apply for book vouchers?

Once you have resolved all pending financial aid items and see that you have a valid credit on your account, you will need to complete the Book Voucher Request Form located on your Bloomfield Portal under Resources.

Once I apply, how long will I need to wait before receiving those funds? How will I receive them? 

You will receive an email from financial_services@bloomfield.edu with the subject of “Book Store Credit NOW Available” once your book voucher has been approved. At this time, your full credit amount will be reflected on the online bookstore page in the top right corner after you login. This process usually takes two to three business days.
