Bloomfield College Nursing Division Holds Annual Nurses Pinning

Bloomfield College celebrated its graduating nursing students on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at its annual Nurses Pinning.

The Frances M. McLaughlin Division of Nursing at the College began the afternoon by officially ushering students into the ranks of nursing alumni at the Robert V. Van Fossan Theatre.

“You have made, and will continue to make, a significant commitment to this profession and all that it implies: healing, compassion, care, and a dedication to modern science and hard work,” said Richard A. Levao, College President. “The nursing profession is the most exciting, scary, and uplifting of all the professions.”

The pinning ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition. It signifies students’ official initiation into the nursing profession. The modern ceremony dates back to the 1860s, when Florence Nightingale was awarded the Red Cross of Saint George in recognition for her unstinting service to the wounded during the Crimean War. To share the honor, she in turn presented a medal of excellence to her brightest graduates. By 1916, the practice was commonplace throughout the United States.

“I haven’t felt this good since the day I learned I was admitted to the Bloomfield College nursing program,” said Alexandra “Alex” Cicchetti. Cicchetti, who earned the highest G.P.A. amongst the 23 nursing students, delivered the senior address. “We’ve spent the last four years calling ourselves ‘nursing students.’ Now, we retire that name. Today, we are nurses. Class of 2017, I know I could not have done this without you.”

As Dr. Tremaine Grimes, Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of Faculty announced names, Bloomfield College nursing students received their divisional pins. Families, friends, and members of the Bloomfield College community watched, cheered, and snapped pictures in the packed theatre.

BSN graduates included Jazmen Archibold; Maritess M. Balmater; Sheyla E. Barreto; Alexandra Milan Cicchetti; Brian Gabriel Diaz; Quanteria Renee Dickson; Alisha Ann Dixon; Jessca Michele Fernandes; Adedayo Olusore Kolawole; Stephanie Landaverde, who received the alumni award; Satenik Laube; Belkis Lopez; Stephanie Miller, the recipient of the Academic Recognition Award; Zamel Mitchell; Lauren Park; Kajal Patel, who received the Daisy in Training Award; Christopher Perry; Tina Marie Revollar; Alexandra Lynn Richardson, Sara Soares Rodas, Dennis Rubio; Renisson Saint Jean, recipient of the Nursing Faculty Award; and Moraima Soto.
