Thursday, August 22, 2013: Attention All Students

Our banking partners at Provident Bank in Bloomfield have asked the College to issue an alert and warning concerning a number of banking scams which have affected some of our students within the past few months.

Our students have been victims of internet scams which included: online purchases, disbursement of fraudulent rebate checks to students with instructions to deposit the checks in their personal accounts and return significant portions back to the originator of the rebate via Money Gram. Other incidents involved students receiving early advances on a new job opportunity discovered online. In this type of scenario, the alleged employer requested for the students to return part of an advance (an over payment error) via Money Gram immediately.  In both types of instances, students are left responsible for the overdraft on their accounts.  By the time the item is returned to the bank as non-negotiable, the funds are already gone/unrecoverable& untraceable and the students are left with the responsibility of repaying the deficit to their accounts.

All students are encouraged to exercise major caution with financial online interactions. Identify theft and internet fraud is at all time high on a national and global level. Please report any suspicious online transactions to your banker or creditor immediately.

For additional details, please contact the Office of Student Affairs.
