CSLE Holds World AIDS Day Ceremony

Bloomfield College students came together to help raise awareness for one of the world’s largest epidemics Dec. 2, as the Center for Student Leadership and Engagement (CSLE) held its annual “World Aids Day” program in the institution’s Student Center.

Over 60 students attended the educational event, with 10 students volunteering through song performances, poem recitals and interpretive dance numbers (each dedicated to a student’s family member suffering from the disease). Audience members and performers donned red ribbons in support of the international cause, a reminder of the millions currently impacted by the disease.

The festivities also included remarks from three health educators from Hyacinth AIDS Foundation, who conducted an HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness workshop for guests. Students were able to conclude their afternoon by signing the event’s “Poster of Hope”, which echoed the year’s theme of “Getting to Zero” (zero deaths, infections and discrimination).

“Even though AIDS impacts families worldwide each day, Bloomfield students remembered those who have passed and those who are currently struggling,” Coordinator for Service Learning and Diversity Initiatives Nereida Montijo said. “They sent a message of hope, support and love to those in the audience who have been personally affected. Our students did an incredible job of spreading awareness through touching, heartfelt acts; I was very proud to see how beautiful the day turned out.”
