Peter DeSarno

Bloomfield College of Montclair State University Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Accounting Peter C. DeSarno, CPA, MBA, MS, was recently honored with a 2024 Good Scouts Award at the 12th Annual New Providence Good Scout Awards reception, held March 14, 2024 at the Primavera Regency, Stirling, New Jersey.

The Good Scout Award is a long running tradition of the Boy Scouts of America Patriots’ Path Council, awarded to community members by community members in recognition of their good works and countless hours of service. For more than 23 years, Patriots’ Path has honored hundreds of men and women “who model the way for the youth in [the] Council, and through their vocations and avocations, exemplify the Scout Oath and Scout Law.”

A resident of New Providence, New Jersey for more than 25 years, and a professor at Bloomfield College since Fall 2021, DeSarno is highly engaged in both his residential and campus communities.

“I am passionate about teaching and supporting my students in the pursuit of their career aspirations,” said DeSarno. “I hope, through my actions, to show my students the power that a degree in accounting and obtaining the CPA designation can have in academia, industry and in the community.”

A grateful double cornea transplant recipient, DeSarno has for many years been a strong advocate in support of organ and tissue donation. He has served as the controller of the New Providence-based NJ Sharing Network, and currently serves on the Advisory Board of Eversight(formerly known as the Lions Eye Bank of New Jersey). He is also an active member of the New Providence Lions Club where he serves as vice president. Over the years, he has served the New Providence community in a number of roles, including being the chair of both the Finance and Capital Improvements Committees.

Touting a 25-year accounting career, DeSarno was honored with a 2023 Impact Ovation Award by the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA) in recognition of “exemplary efforts and stellar achievement in advancing New Jersey’s accounting profession.” He is also the recipient of NJCPA’s Volunteer Award that is given for dedicated service to worthy causes in the community and making a significant difference.

In his professional life, DeSarno started as an auditor with the Big4 public accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche, and has served in leadership positions as a controller in public, private and non-profit organizations. Prior to teaching accounting at Bloomfield College, he taught in the evenings as an adjunct professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University and the County College of Morris.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and both a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in financial planning from Seton Hall University. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and an active member of both the NJCPA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
