Bloomfield College is participating with several private and public colleges and universities in the Garden State-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (GS-LSAMP) program. The LSAMP program was initiated by the National Science Foundation and was designed to greatly increase the number of professionals in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) from minority and other groups who are traditionally underrepresented through the formation of learning communities and support systems. BC-LSAMP scholars will be provided with a supportive and challenging learning environment that will stimulate and nurture their curiosity, and build strong analytic and critical thinking skills. The program will provide support services at many levels to help interested students become successful in STEM majors.

The outstanding benefits and opportunities of the LSAMP program to the students include:

• Becoming part of a larger learning community among the alliance participants.

• Earning stipends for tutoring, leading study groups, doing research, and community services.

• Gaining research experiences in a specific field of interest in faculty laboratories.

• Participating in internships for practical experience and networking.

• Participating in the national LSAMP conferences.

• Graduating with a solid degree and outstanding opportunities for careers or graduate school.

• Opportunities to have international experience at laboratories through special programs that provide financial support.

• Qualification for the Bridges to the Doctorate program which allows attendance at any one of a number of universities with financial support for two years.

About the GS-LSAMP Program

The Garden State-LSAMP program, led by Rutgers University, is divided into three clusters of schools to allow ease of access for students to participate in programs at schools within a specific vicinity. The three clusters of schools are:

• The northern cluster which includes Montclair State University, William Paterson College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Bloomfield College. Montclair State University is the "hub" of the program's northern cluster.

• The central cluster includes Rutgers – Newark, Kean University, New Jersey City University, and Essex County College. Rutgers University is the "hub" of the program's central cluster.

• The southern cluster includes Rutgers – New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, and School of Environmental Biology and Sciences.

Funding for the LSAMP program is provided by the National Science Foundation.
